Poole Hospital Becomes Smokefree
Poole
Hospital became the first in the area to officially become smokefree
on April 1 2006.
The new hospital policy came into some nine months before the Government's recommended date of 31 December 2006 for all NHS premises. The ban applies to all staff, patients and visitors and in all parts of the hospital grounds. It has been implemented because of the considerable health risks associated with smoking.
Staff have been offered help to stop smoking through Poole NHS Stop Smoking Service and Poole Hospitals Occupational Health Department, patients and visitors will also be made aware of the local resources available to help them quit.
Whilst many local hospitals are gradually phasing in the new policy, starting with staff, then patients and finally visitors, Poole Hospital implemented the policy in one go.
For information on stopping smoking, phone the NHS Smoking Helpline free on 0800 1690169 or visit www.gosmokefree.co.uk.
Since 1st July 2007 virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England became smokefree. Find out more about it at the website www.smokefreeengland.co.uk
