Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has appointed a new Consultant Radiographer within the Dorset Breast Screening Unit – the first post of its kind in the county. Breast imaging expert Zebby Rees took up the post this month, and her specialist skills will be of great benefit to the unit as it expands in order to provide screening to a wider age group.

Previously employed in Cardiff at the Welsh Breast Screening Unit, Zebby brings over 10 years’ experience to the role. She will provide specialist input on the interpretation of mammograms and other investigative procedures, and will also contribute to the research of breast imaging techniques.

The creation of this new post is part of the unit’s plans to provide screening to more women over the coming years. At present, the National Breast Screening Programme means that all women between 50 and 70 years are invited for screening at three-yearly intervals. However, the Department of Health’s new Cancer Reform Strategy, released last week, outlines plans to include women between 47 and 73 years in the programme by 2012. 1

This increase represents an extra 26,500 women across the county, so the Dorset Breast Screening Unit is taking steps to increase its capacity in preparation for the expansion, which begins nationally in April 2008.

Breast Imaging Manager Chris Woodgate said: “We are very fortunate to have someone with Zebby’s experience at the Dorset Breast Screening Unit. It will help us to face the challenges of the Breast Screening Programme expansion without compromising our excellent quality standards or performance.”

Zebby said: “I’m very happy to be here in Dorset and am really looking forward to the new challenge that this post will present, and the opportunity to use my experience to benefit local women.”
