Charity cricket match to benefit patients with head injuries

A charity 20/20 match between Wayfarers Cricket Club and Wroughton Wranglers Cricket Club will take place at 4pm on Friday 12 September to benefit patients with head injuries at Poole Hospital.

The charity match – which will take place at Wayfarers Sports Club, Dolmans Farm, Ferndown – came about after Wroughton Wranglers cricketer Martyn Gregory heard of the accident that led to Wayfarers cricketer Phil Williams being admitted to hospital. Phil was hit by a cricket ball in June and sustained a serious head injury; Martyn had previously been the victim of a similar incident in which he suffered a double fracture of the cheekbone, also caused by a beamer.

At Phil’s suggestion the funds raised will be donated to the Portland Ward at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Phil is currently being cared for on this specialist ward, which looks after patients with head injuries and neurological conditions. Money raised on the day will be used to benefit the patients’ day room and help towards items that aid patients’ rehabilitation.

Activities on the day include a barbeque for participants and spectators, along with a selection of great prizes to be won at the charity raffle.

Both Wroughton and Wayfarers clubs have also raised funds to donate to the ward, and these will be added to the proceeds on the day.

The clubs hope not only a healthy donation to be raised but also to highlight the need for ALL cricketers to appreciate the importance of wearing helmets and protective equipment whilst participating in all forms of cricket.
