Poole Hospital has taken the first steps towards the building of a £30 million new maternity hospital and day surgery unit by selecting Interserve Project Services Ltd as procurement partners.

Interserve, which is the principal supply chain partner within NHS Estates’ Procure21 scheme, will work with the Hospital on the design, development and construction of the new building.

The new unit will be built within the hospital’s main site at Longfleet Road, and the new development will house both the new maternity hospital and a day surgery unit.

Work is scheduled to start on site before the end of 2009, with the project due for completion in 2012.

A project board has been set up to oversee the new build. The design development will involve all staff from maternity and day surgery, together with patients and the wider community so that the buildings can be built around patient and clinical needs.

Peter Harvey, Chairman of Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: ‘This marks a very important stage in the history of Poole Hospital, with the start of a major new development.  We are delighted to be working on this exciting new project.  Our aim is to create an innovative facility that meets the needs of our local population now and for the future’.
