Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I have a family history of breast cancer. Where can I find more information
about this?
A. Information booklets giving all this information are available for the
general public or health professionals by ringing the NHS response line
on 08701555455(quoting ref. no. N0562 or visiting their website at www.nice.org.uk)
Q. I have breast cancer. Where can I get information and support?
A. "Breast Cancer Care" is an organisation that supports women
with breast cancer. You can telephone them on 0845 077 1895 or visit them
on their web site at www.breastcancercare.org.ukThey also have a helpline number on 0808 800 6000
Q. Does breast screening hurt?
A. This varies for different women. For some it is just a sensation of
pressure (a bit like having your blood pressure taken). Others may feel
some discomfort but this is only short-lived.
Q. I have cosmetic implants. Can I still be screened?
A. Yes, but because it is technically slightly more difficult, it is not
appropriate for you to have an appointment on a mobile unit. Therefore
please inform us so that we can accommodate you in our static unit clinic.
Q. Is there any danger to my breasts from the radiation used to perform
the mammogram?
A. Although radiation should never be used indiscriminately, the dose for
mammography is very low and the benefits greatly outweigh any estimated
risk
Q. I am unable to get up the steep steps into the mobile unit. Can I still
be screened?
A. Yes, you can be screened but you will need to make an appointment in
our static unit which has no steps and is accessible for people with disabilities.
Q. If I move house, will I miss my screening?
A. You will be called for screening with your new practice when you register
with a new doctor.
