Breast Screening – The Facts
Every
year in the UK approximately 44,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer
and 13,000 die from the disease. - 80% of breast cancers occur in the “over 50” age group.
- Unfortunately, we don’t know what causes the disease or how to prevent it, but early detection in this age group greatly improves the outcome in most cases.
- Ladies between the ages of 50 and 70 are automatically invited for screening every 3 years. When they reach their 50th year they will be called with their doctor’s practice next time it is screened.
- Anybody over this age is entitled to breast screening and may refer themselves by ringing the unit and making an appointment.
- After screening ladies will receive their result by letter in 2 –3 weeks.
- Occasionally ladies are recalled for “technical reasons” when a repeat film is necessary because of a technical fault.
- Approximately 7% of ladies will be recalled to the static unit in Poole for further assessment. This does not necessarily mean that anything is wrong. It may just be that more information (maybe further films, ultrasound, clinical exam etc.) is required before a result can be given.
- It is estimated that for every 500 women screened in the programme, 1 life will be saved.
N.B. The breast screening service is for “well women” and anyone with breast symptoms should see their G.P. and be referred to a symptomatic breast clinic where a proper assessment can be carried out.
