Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Day Care Chemotherapy Unit

Telephone: 01202 442656

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday 8.30am – 6pm

The Day Care Chemotherapy Unit provides a range of treatments and specialist care that can safely be given on a day patient basis.

Although the unit is part of the Cancer Centre not all of the patients attending the unit have Cancer, many will visit to receive the specialist services that the unit provides.

The unit aims to work with patients and carers to plan care that meets individual needs and maintains independence as far as possible.

Facilities

The unit has a mixture of beds and comfortable chairs for use during treatment. Each chair/bed space is arranged much like a hospital ward with curtains that can be pulled around the space for privacy if required.

There are toilet facilities at either end of the ward , with two disabled access toilets near to the reception area.

Refreshments and Meals

Facilities are available to make hot and cold drinks on the ward. The staff will be happy to serve these or patients/carers may help themsleves if they are able.
Lunch is provided for patients who are receiving an all day treatment. All dietary needs are catered for and there is a full choice menu to choose from.
Relatives attending with patients can access the main hospital dinning room to purchase meals.

Visiting

We encourge patients to bring a supportive partner or friend with them if they choose. However, space is limited so we ask for not more than two visitors to attend.

Non-Smoking Policy

The Hospital operates a no smoking policy in its buildings and grounds and it is therefore not possible for patients or carers to smoke whilst attending the day care unit. Support or advice in stopping smoking or for nicotine replacement whilst patients are in hospital can be obtained from GP’s or a nurse on the unit.

Useful Tips

Whilst on the unit patients may experience unavoidable delays such as waiting for chemotherapy drugs to be made or blood tests to be repeated. If this should occur, patients are able to go to the restaurant or make a coffee on the ward with a bleep system in place to call patients back to the department when they are required.
