Durlston Ward is one of two in-patient wards in the Cancer Centre. It specialises in the care of patients with haematological (blood) cancers and stem cell transplants in addition to other forms of cancer. It is situated on the lower ground floor level of the Cancer Centre and is accessed via entrance 6 and 8 .
The ward is managed by the Ward Sister and is overseen by the Modern Matron for Oncology. If you would like to discuss any aspects of care with them please ask a member of staff.
Ward Facilities
The ward has 16 beds arranged as either single rooms or two bedded rooms, each has its own en-suite shower and toilet facilities.
The ward has a pleasant day room where patients can relax, watch television or listen to music. There is a kitchen/dinning room where patients can sit for meals.
The ward has access to the private cancer centre garden where patients and their visitors can relax.
Every bed space has a patient line TV and telephone. A payment card can be purchased in the lobby at the end of the ward.
The ward has portable DVD players and CD players which patients can borrow during their admission.
Visiting Times
The ward generally has open visiting for close family and friends. However during certain periods of the day visiting is restricted so that patients are able to eat meals or rest with minimal disruption.
Rest period for patients between 2.30pm and 3.30pm
Meal times for patients are at 8am, 1pm and 5pm.
Patients and visitors are able to discuss these arrangements with ward staff if they are inconvenient.
The Cancer Centre has a facility for carers to stay overnight in certain circumstances. Details of these arrangement can be discussed with ward staff.
Ward Rounds
Each day patients are reviewed by one of the junior Doctors in the team. Consultant ward rounds are normally undertaken twice weekly.
Appointments to see doctors can be made by contacting the Consultants
secretary or the nurse in charge
Special Instructions
A number of patients on the ward will be vulnerable to infection because of their illness or treatment. For this reason we do not allow fresh flowers and plants on the ward. It is also vitally important that you do not visit patients on the ward if you are suffering from symptoms such as diarrhoea or vomiting, chest or other infections.
If you are unsure about this please do not hesitate to contact the ward for more information.
Discharge Home
We aim to get patients home as soon as possible after completion of medical treatment. The plans for this will normally begin early in the stay in order that we can make all the appropriate arrangements. If you can foresee problems in getting yourself or your relative home then please tell the nurse in charge as soon as possible.
