Research and Clinical Trials

The Dorset Cancer Centre is committed to providing people with cancer with the most effective care and treatment. As part of this commitment, the Centre is involved in many clinical trials and research studies and works as part of the Dorset Cancer Research Network; one of the Government's National Cancer Research Networks.

Research into new ways of treating and managing cancer is very important. We rely on people to help us make progress in the fight against cancer. There is evidence to suggest that being part of a research study or clinical trial is beneficial to the individual and, of course, participation will help those who develop cancer in the future.

The clinical trials in Dorset involve a variety surgical techniques, radiotherapy methods or drug treatments. We are also involved in research aimed at improving patient experiences, both within the hospital setting and the community.

All studies must be approved by at least one independent ethics committee to ensure that they are legitimate and above-board. If patients are eligible for inclusion in a clinical trial then this will be discussed with them.

Whether patients join a trial is entirely up to them. They are free to choose and we will respect the decision they make. If patients are invited to join a trial but choose not to or to withdraw from it, they will be given the best standard treatment available in accordance with their wishes.

Patients wishing to discuss any aspect of cancer research and clinical trial activity in the Dorset Cancer Centre, should ask their doctor or any member of the health care team to contact a research nurse, who will welcome any queries.
