Kingston Lacy Ward (B2)
Ward B2 Kingston Lacey Telephone: 01202 442542
Kingston Lacy is a 28-bed ward specialising in gynaecological problems and related surgery, with five beds allocated to the general surgery department.
Patients are admitted into the care of seven gynaecologists.
The ward consists of single-bedded rooms, three and four-bedded bays, and
is divided into two nursing teams with two team leaders responsible for
nursing care.
The medical and nursing staff run pre-operative assessment clinics three times per week. These sessions enable nurses and doctors to assess the patients, complete necessary documentation and investigations relevant to the patient's proposed operation, and address any worries or concerns, which may be expressed. It also enables the nurse and the patient to plan the care that will be received throughout the patient's stay and also facilitates a smooth discharge with appropriate support services where appropriate.
On Saturdays and bank holidays, a service which is available in the Day Case Unit during the week, is provided for patients who are experiencing problems in early pregnancy. This consists of an assessment by a member of the medical team, the provision of an ultrasound scan to determine viability of the pregnancy, and emotional support if problems have been identified. To enhance this service we have an Early Pregnancy Nurse/Counselor to support and advise patients suffering from early pregnancy loss and also patients undergoing termination of pregnancy.
Advice on the menopause and hormone replacement therapy is available from our Menopause Nurse Specialist. The Macmillan or Gynaecology nurse provides support for patients undergoing cancer treatment and surgery.
Physiotherapists give advice and instruction to patients in a monthly pre-operative education group in conjunction with the Menopause Nurse and Ward Senior Staff Nurse. This service is provided in the hospitals' resource center. During the post-operative period the physiotherapists visits twice weekly to see patients on the ward. Post-operative support is provided in twice monthly meetings by the Physiotherapists and Menopause Nurse at St Mary's' Gynaecology unit.
